National Galleries Scotland drawing workshop

a tree silhouetted against the night skyI’ve been invited to lead an online drawing workshop for the National Galleries Scotland soon, for their ‘Drawing Room Kitchen Table’ series, which is part of their public education programme.

I will be introducing the reductive method of drawing I use for much of my work, demonstrating how to move from dark to light to create drama and subtlety in charcoal or graphite.

It’s my favourite approach to tonal drawing but it can present some challenges when you are unfamiliar with it. We are so used to beginning with a white surface and adding dark marks, but this method requires us to reverse that way of seeing and start by removing the light areas, gradually lifting out your pigment to reveal form and structure before adding detail.

The online workshop is on Wednesday 11th June 6-6.45pm.
