‘Seen in the Trees’
A solo show at Arundells on Salisbury’s Cathedral Close.

What do we see when we look at trees?
Although we are surrounded by trees, how often do we really look at them? Trees may represent many things to us: a place to play, to meet, to shelter, to remember, to heal. Old trees in particular can be powerful symbols of struggle, resilience, inventiveness and endurance.
I draw them to find out what looking at trees can tell us about their lives and our own in turn.
This solo exhibition brings together three strands of work. The dramatic charcoals celebrate the dynamic forms of beech trees, capturing their movement as if we could observe tree-time speeded up to match our own.
Inspired by ancient wood pasture sites, my mixed media paintings incorporate ground stone and charcoal to evoke these richly layered historic landscapes. My series of monoprints showcase the charcoal printmaking technique I have recently developed, expanding the possibilities for working with this ancient medium.
Although rooted in observation, this work blurs the boundaries between human and more-than-human, hinting at figure, wood and water but always inviting the viewer to find their own personal connections and meaning.
